CHPDP Faculty Receives NIH Funding

People with mobility impairments are disproportionately affected by diet-related health conditions. Physical and environmental barriers lead to poor dietary habits in people with mobility impairments but no instrument exists to define and document these barriers in this population.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has awarded an R21 to Dr. Rebecca E. Lee, of Arizona State University’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (CHPDP) titled, “Food Environment Measurement for People with Mobility Impairments.” This research will develop and test an instrument that measures multi-level factors that facilitate or inhibit dietary habits in people with mobility impairments.

“I am pleased to be working on this proposal to develop and test an instrument to measure food environments from the perspective of people with mobility impairments,” stated Dr. Lee. “Identifying barriers to healthy habits can guide efforts to promote health equity in this community.”

Dr. Lee will lead this research as Co-Principal Investigator with Dr. Peg Nosek of Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine. Additional researchers include Dr. Dan O’Connor (University of Houston), Dr. Rosemary Hughes (University of Montana), and Drs. Punam Ohri-Vachaspati and Michael Todd (ASU).
